NOS VEMOS EN MURMANSK
Actualmente trabajo en un proyecto titulado "Nos vemos en Murmansk". La invitación para exponer en KULTUREVOLUTION en la histórica ciudad, comercial y naviera, de Cádiz, se presenta como un desafío especial; ya que abre la posibilidad de relacionar el tema general del proyecto con otras historias de la navegación y los viajes en barco. El trabajo consiste en composiciones en serie conectadas de pequeño formato, tamaño postal, de pinturas acrílicas lacadas (20,4 X 10,9 cm). La composición más grande consiste en 240 imágenes en blanco y negro que se funden en una gama de grises cálidos. Dos composiciones más pequeñas, consistentes en 42 imágenes cada una, en una gama de grises que tornan al rosa y al verde respectivamente. Cada imagen presenta un solo barco. Todas juntas representan una memoria colectiva - la de los convoys que iban a Murmansk durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El recuerdo de este decisivo y dramático episodio de la guerra se está perdiendo. El impulso de enfrascarme en este trabajo proviene de mi propia experiencia en la mar así como de mi interés en la navegación; desde los fenicios hasta la navegación moderna. El trabajo habla de la fase entre la noche y el amanecer, cuando las embarcaciones se alineaban en convoys, una tras otra, flotando arriba y abajo en el oleaje. Cada imagen constituye un mundo en sí misma y, aún así, son parte de un todo ordenado en una configuración predefinida con una meta definida. El sufrimiento y el sacrificio de los marineros es profundamente conmovedor y su esfuerzo admirable. Este trabajo está dedicado a estas personas en una especie de solidaridad póstuma.
SEE YOU IN MURMANSK
I am currently engaged in a major project with the working title “See you in Murmansk”. The invitation to hold an exhibition at KULTUREVOLUTION in the historical trading and shipping city of Cadiz offers a particular challenge as it opens up for possibilities to relate the general theme of the project to other histories of navigation and seafaring.
The work consists of connected, serial compositions of small, postcard-sized, lacquered acrylic paintings (20.4 x 10.9 cm). The largest composition consists of 240 images in black and white, fading into a range of warm grey. Two smaller compositions, consist of 42 images each, in a range of grey colour shaded in rose and green respectively. Each image portrays an individual ship. Together, they represent a collective memory – that of the convoys to Murmansk during the World War II.
The remembrance of this decisive and dramatic episode of the war is now waning. My impulse to engage in this work stems from my own experience at sea, and a lifelong interest in navigation, from the Phoenicians to modern shipping.
The work tells about the phase between night and dawn when the vessels line up in convoy, one after the other, floating up and down on the swells. Each one of them constitutes a world of its own and yet, they are part of an ordered whole in a predefined configuration with a defined common goal. The suffering and sacrifice of the seamenis deeply moving,their effort admirable. This work is dedicated to them in a kind of posthumous solidarity.
